Clinical Nutritionist

Claudia DeSantis, MS, CNS, LDN

Hi! I am Claudia, long time healthy vegan turned clinical nutritionist with a passion for natural healing and and optimized health with a personalized, evidence based approach.

My story as a nutritionist starts with the decision to refrain from continue to consume animal products for ethical reasons beginning in 2008. As someone who grew up eating backyard eggs and organic grass fed meats from rich subtropical Brazilian soil, and who enjoyed the taste of animal based foods, this was a challenging decision. In attempts to avoid eating animal based foods as I transitioned, I started to search everything I could learn about nutrition, which lead me to start blending highly nutritious smoothies and prepping healthy meals to take to work.

As I completely changed my dietary pattern, my health, which was considered great by allopathic standards took an unexpected turn. Normalized things like constant fatigue, seasonal allergies every season, periodic colds, flus and infections, constipation, anxiety, headaches, tooth decay and pain, iron and vitamin deficiencies, particularly B12, PMS symptoms and so on vanished.

Once I experienced a sense of full wellness, going back to a mediocre state of health commonality was no longer an option. As my family and friends watched me getting healthier and stronger while aging, I became a reference for healthy eating and lifestyle in my circles, making it imperative that I had to seek the proper training to support others in achieving the benefits of plant based diets I have and continue to experience in a coherent, responsible, and scientifically sound manner.

Years preceding my journey in the nutrition world, I worked in the medical system, mostly in gastroenterology, and witnessed first-hand the impact of poor food choices in the health of our communities and the financial burden imposed by such conditions, which are ever more common.

Having going from average health to optimal wellness with nutritional changes, I felt an urge to share my knowledge, helping people nourishing their way to better health. I then pursued a Master’s of Science degree in Clinical Nutrition and now I am here to help, followed by intense supervised practice and passing board test first time, meeting rigorous criteria for the Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) credential. Prior to earning my MSCN, I studied anthropology and international studies at the University of California, Irvine where I acquired strong research skills. As a nutritionist, I specialize in all kinds of GI issues from serious conditions like IBS, Crohn’s Disease, GERD, to common discomforts such as constipation, diarrhea, excessive bloating and more. In addition to GI, I also specialize in working with clients to improve and manage hypothyroidism, diabetes, weight gain, weight loss, and autoimmune diseases.

On my free time, I love hiking, dancing samba with my friends, spending time with my birds Bambam and Kahuna, and looking at the latest nutrition and disease research. I also love history, philosophy, and activism. I was a very young mother of two daughters who are now adults and I am better able to commit to my career dreams. I am originally from Brazil, born in 1975 growing in poverty through the dire hyperinflation of the 80s. I currently live California, Unites States since 2005. Having living in a few other countries prior to settling in California, I had the opportunity to learn other languages while getting to know the way of life and culture of people within various ethnic backgrounds. I tap into these experiences to provide individual care that is sensible, realistic, and community oriented. Food is a major aspect of identity, and nutrition can be a fun, connecting, enriching experience.
